In the early 1800's Fayetteville was a
stagecoach stop on the Bastrop to San Felipe
Trail. The area was settled in the 1820's by
members of Stephen F. Austin's Colony. German
immigrants (1830's) were followed by Czechs
(1850's) and to this day those early settlers'
culture remains the dominant and very important
part of the town's
history and heritage.
Downtown Fayetteville boasts over 340 structures
on the
National Register of Historic Places
along with numerous
Texas Historic Markers
within the city limits. The town is
recognized for both its architectural and
historical
significance. German immigrants arrived in
the 1830s, the town was platted in 1850 and
large numbers of Czech and Moravian families
immigrated to the area in the late 19th
century. A stroll around the town square
will give you a taste of the influences left by
those who settled here. It is hard not to
be captivated by the charm of town and the
friendly people you will encounter! |
